Heal Farms – a local family farming business
Heal Farms based near Shawbury, is a family egg production business. Heritage and tradition remain central but the family are always looking at new ideas, technology and innovations to take the business forwards for future generations. The opportunity to sell eggs into ASDA is an exciting venture for the Heal family who started egg production in 1952, when Roger and Vera Heal purchased a 3 acre site and filled it with wooden chicken coops housing 400 birds.
Today the farm is run by Roger and Vera’s son Tony, with the support of his wife Helen. Their two daughters are already showing a keen interest in egg production. The business has progressed and expanded, it has 200,000 free range layers, as well as 64,000 rearing birds. The farm produces 275,000 eggs every day and 100 million eggs each year.
Tony Heal, Owner of Heal Farms, commented on the new brand launch:
“For our farming family business, the launch of Heal’s Free Range Eggs into ASDA stores across our home county is monumental. We cannot wait to see our product hit the shelves. The number one focus for us is our hens and their welfare is our highest priority. In 2006 we built the first multi-tier free range unit in England. This significantly enhanced the welfare of our birds as they are free to express their natural behaviour. Happy, comfortable and stress free hens help to produce the best quality eggs. All of our laying sites are BEIC (lion Code) and Freedom Food (RSPCA) accredited and the bird welfare is key. Our free range hens have a wonderful view of the South Shropshire hills and Welsh mountains and when customers select a box of Heal’s Free Range Eggs they can be confident that they are investing in a quality product from a local family business, where hens are cared for and nurtured to the highest standard.”
Terri Saunders, Buying Manager at ASDA, commented on the launch:
“ASDA is delighted to welcome the Heals Family eggs into Shropshire stores. We love to work with producers who have a genuine passion for what they do.
